About this position
Montana State University is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Microbiology & Cell Biology in Bozeman, Montana, United States.
The Wiedenheft Lab is seeking a highly motivated postdoc to study the structural mechanisms of bacterial immune systems that defend bacteria against viral (phage) infection. The project focuses on CRISPR-Cas complexes, Defense-associated Reverse Transcriptases (DRTs), Retrons, and other newly discovered anti-phage defense systems.
The position emphasizes structural biology with a strong cryo-EM component, especially single-particle cryo-electron microscopy. The successful candidate will determine high-resolution structures, prepare and characterize protein complexes, collect and process cryo-EM data using a 200 keV Thermo Fisher Talos Arctica, and integrate structural findings with biochemical, genetic, and evolutionary analyses.
Required background includes a Ph.D. in Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or a related field; hands-on cryo-EM experience; protein expression/purification expertise; troubleshooting ability; publication or preprint productivity; and strong communication and teamwork skills. Preferred experience includes Talos Arctica operation, membrane protein work, lipid nanodiscs, detergent-solubilized systems, computational phylogenetics, evolutionary genomics, and mentoring trainees.
This is a full-time, benefits-eligible research professional appointment with salary commensurate with experience, education, and qualifications. Applications are screened starting 2026-12-31 and will be accepted until an adequate applicant pool is established. The posting also notes that the position is not eligible for new sponsorship.
