About this position
The Laboratory of Protein Structure at the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw (IIMCB), headed by Prof. Marcin Nowotny, is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher for a project focused on elucidating the mechanisms of plastid genome packaging.
The successful candidate will join the project “IMPRESS-U DCL: Supplement: Structure and function of plastid nucleoid,” funded under NAWA BPN/NSF/2023/1/00011 and linked to the International Multilateral Partnerships for Resilient Education and Science System in Ukraine (IMPRESS-U) initiative. The work is centered on understanding currently unknown mechanisms of DNA packaging in plastids.
The research will involve purification of proteins involved in plastid DNA packaging and biochemical and structural analysis using cryo-EM and protein crystallography. This is a research-intensive postdoctoral role with no teaching obligations, offering full-time employment and strong technical, administrative, and organizational support within an English-speaking environment.
Eligibility highlights include a PhD in Biology, Biotechnology, Medicine, or a related field; candidates from Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, and other fields may also be considered if they bring relevant experience. Prior protein biochemistry/purification experience is important, and expertise in crystallography and/or cryo-EM is advantageous. Applicants should have excellent English communication skills, presentation experience, at least one first-author publication in an international peer-reviewed journal, and a collaborative, proactive attitude.
The position starts on 1 January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter. Applications are due by 2 November 2026, 23:59 Europe/Warsaw. Compensation is a full-time salary of 9,700 gross per month, with possible additional benefits such as the 13th salary and Christmas bonus. The institute also offers private medical care options, MultiSport membership, scientific training, courses, peer support, and academic mentoring.
To apply, candidates must submit their application in English via the eRecruiter system, including a CV with full publication list, a motivation letter, and contact details for at least two referees, including one direct supervisor. The CV must also contain the required personal data consent statement.
