About this position
Leiden University invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position focused on enzyme characterization and enzyme engineering within an EU-funded project. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team working on the genetic engineering of bacteria to create sustainable cell factories capable of converting single-carbon feedstocks into valuable chemicals. The project integrates expertise in metabolic engineering, enzyme engineering, computational modelling, and process optimization to develop high-efficiency biotechnological solutions for sustainable chemical production.
The postdoc will be responsible for the biochemical characterization of naturally occurring enzymes and the improvement of their properties through advanced enzyme engineering techniques. These include structure-based mutagenesis, growth-coupled selection, and directed evolution. The work will be conducted in collaboration with partner institutions across Europe, providing a dynamic and international research environment. The position is embedded within the Institute of Biology Leiden (IBL), which is renowned for its research on biodiversity, health, and sustainable biotechnology. The IBL is located in the heart of the Leiden Bio Science Park, one of Europe’s largest science parks, offering excellent opportunities for academic and industrial collaboration.
Applicants should hold a PhD in biochemistry, biotechnology, synthetic biology, microbiology, or a related field. Essential qualifications include hands-on experience with heterologous protein production, purification, and characterization using spectrophotometric or LC-MS-based assays. Candidates should also have a background in enzyme engineering, including targeted or random mutagenesis, high-throughput screening, directed evolution, or growth coupling. Experience with enzyme structure analysis via crystallography or cryo-EM is advantageous. The ability to work collaboratively in an international team and willingness to travel are important.
The position is full-time and fixed-term, starting from May 2026 until July 2028. The salary ranges from €3546 to €5538 gross per month, with additional holiday and end-of-year bonuses, training, career development opportunities, and sabbatical leave. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break. Leiden University is committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse academic community.
To apply, submit a motivation letter detailing your experience with enzyme characterization and engineering, a CV, and the names and contact details of 2-3 referees via the Leiden University careers portal. For further information about the position, contact Dr. Lennart Schada von Borzyskowski at [email protected]. The application deadline is 5 February 2026.
Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
