About this position
The experimental particle physics group at the University of California, Irvine is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work on the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The project is centered on high-energy collider physics and combines searches for beyond-the-Standard-Model particles and forces with the development and application of machine-learning tools for particle physics.
The researcher will work primarily with Prof. Daniel Whiteson and will be part of the UCI ATLAS group, which also includes Profs. Andre Frankenthal, Anyes Taffard, and Andrew Lankford. The position can be based either at CERN or at UC Irvine, and the successful candidate will have broad latitude to pursue an independent research agenda within the group’s experimental particle physics program.
The UCI ATLAS team is embedded in a collaborative environment that connects experimental particle physics with the university’s theory and phenomenology group and local machine-learning expertise through the UCI Center for Machine Learning. This role is therefore well suited to a researcher interested in combining collider data analysis, new-physics searches, and modern data-science methods in a leading international experiment.

What's required
The applicant should have, or be about to gain, a Ph.D. in particle physics and is expected to have at least two years of active participation in a leading international particle physics experiment. The strongest applicants will have a record of independence and creativity and have published machine-learning-related papers outside of the LHC collaborations.
