About this position
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Jyväskylä is recruiting 2–3 Postdoctoral Researchers in Mathematics for fixed-term appointments of 1–3 years, beginning mainly in autumn 2027 or spring 2027, or as agreed.
The researchers will conduct scientific work connected with one or more of the department’s inverse-problems research groups. The research environment covers mathematical analysis and geometry, including geometric analysis, nonlinear partial differential equations, the geometry of metric groups, stochastics, and stochastic analysis. Inverse-problems research addresses partial differential equations and geometry, with applications in medical and industrial imaging.
The department also includes research in computational statistics, causal models, study design, nonparametric and robust multivariate methods, biometry, and environmental statistics. Researchers are expected to focus primarily on research while participating in a small amount of teaching.
Research is carried out within an international and multidisciplinary community of approximately 100 staff members and 350 students. The department hosts a group in the Research Council of Finland’s Centre of Excellence in Randomness and Structures and participates in the Flagship on Mathematical Modelling, Observation and Imaging. Further information is available from Professor Tapio Rajala and the recruiting research group leaders Joonas Ilmavirta and Mikko Salo.

What's required
Applicants should be promising researchers who have recently completed or are about to complete a doctoral degree. A PhD degree must be completed by the starting date of the contract. Strong preference is given to candidates whose research interests overlap with or complement the department's research areas, particularly inverse problems and related mathematical fields. Applicants must submit documents in English and PDF format, maintain an up-to-date public ORCID profile, and provide a CV, motivation or cover letter, numbered publication list, and highest degree certificate.
How to apply
Apply through the University of Jyväskylä recruitment system by 30 November 2026; applications sent by email are not considered. Ensure that your ORCID profile is public and up to date, then upload an English PDF CV, cover letter, publication list, and highest degree certificate.
