About this position

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher / Research Scientist in Polymer Rheology and Processing to join a dynamic research group in the Physical Science and Engineering Division / Material Science and Engineering area.

The role is centered on advanced polymer science, with a strong focus on polymer rheology, polymer physics, viscoelasticity, and processing. The successful candidate will work on industrially funded projects aimed at understanding and controlling structure–rheology–processability relationships in next-generation functional polymer systems. Research themes include interfacial phenomena, multilayer architectures, morphology evolution, and the preservation of delicate micro- and nanostructures during macroscopic extrusion and related processing steps.

Key scientific tasks include developing processing–structure–property relationships, advancing interfacial rheology, and enabling advanced manufacturing routes such as thermal drawing, co-extrusion, compounding, fiber spinning, thin-film extrusion, and polymer preform fabrication. The position emphasizes both experimental and analytical work on bulk and interfacial rheology, nonlinear viscoelasticity, extensional and shear flow dynamics, and flow instabilities in multiphase and multilayer systems.

The researcher will collaborate with materials scientists, chemists, and industrial process engineers, helping to bridge fundamental polymer physics with practical applications. Responsibilities also include publishing high-impact papers, contributing to intellectual property, and preparing technical reports for industrial stakeholders.

Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in Polymer Science, Polymer Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline, along with demonstrated expertise in polymer rheology, polymer physics, and processing technologies such as extrusion, compounding, or fiber spinning. Strong English communication skills are required. Preferred experience includes interfacial rheology, multilayer co-extrusion, thermal fiber drawing, thin-film processing, modelling of melt flow, and prior work in industrial or technology-transfer settings.

This is a postdoctoral opening at KAUST in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia, and the project is described as industrially funded. Applications are due on 2026-11-17.

What's required

A Ph.D. in Polymer Science, Polymer Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field is required. The candidate should have strong demonstrated expertise in polymer rheology (experimental and/or computational), polymer physics and viscoelasticity, and hands-on experience with polymer processing technologies, particularly extrusion, compounding, or fiber spinning. Applicants must be able to connect molecular structure to rheological behavior and ultimately to processability and final macroscopic properties. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are required. Preferred qualifications include experience with interfacial rheology and multiphase polymer systems, familiarity with multilayer co-extrusion, thermal fiber drawing, or functional thin-film processing, knowledge of thermoplastics such as polyolefins and engineering plastics, computational or analytical modeling of flow during melt processing, and prior experience in industrially funded or technology-transfer environments.
