About this position

RIKEN’s Quantum Computing Research Center is recruiting a Researcher or Special Researcher for the Cold Atomic Quantum Systems Research Team in Japan (Wako Campus, Saitama Prefecture).

The position focuses on quantum computing, quantum simulation, and fundamental physics using a cold atom platform. The lab develops quantum technologies based on individual atoms manipulated by lasers, including laser cooling to ultra-low temperatures, optical tweezers, and excitation of electrons into large orbits to build atom-by-atom quantum systems. The broader research environment emphasizes quantum science, quantum optics, atomic and molecular optics physics, and ultra-cold atoms.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in a related field, or expect to obtain one by the hiring date. Prior research experience in atomic, molecular, or optical physics, or more broadly quantum science, is required/preferred.

Employment and funding: This is a fixed-term contract position. The annual income starts at 5 million yen, with an annual salary system that includes fixed and variable components. Additional allowances may include discretionary work allowance, commuting allowance, and housing allowance. Social insurance is provided.

Work location: RIKEN Wako Campus, 2-1 Hirosawa, Wako City, Saitama Prefecture, Japan. The post states that telecommuting is generally not available for this role.

Application window: Applications must arrive between 2025-12-08 and 2026-12-08, and the search may close earlier once a suitable candidate is found.

How to apply: Submit the required electronic application documents, including a resume and list of achievements, via the public recruitment URL. Contact the team by email for questions.
