About this position
Aalto University is recruiting for 3 postdoctoral researchers and 3 doctoral students in distributed quantum computing, based in the research group of Professor Jukka Suomela at the Department of Computer Science, Aalto University, Finland.
The project focuses on the theoretical foundations of distributed quantum computing, especially understanding which distributed tasks admit a quantum advantage in the LOCAL model of distributed computing and what the fundamental limits are. The positions are supported by an ERC Advanced Grant (Distributed Quantum Advantage, 2026–2031) and a QuantERA grant (Quantum Network Algorithms, 2026–2029).
Research areas and keywords: distributed quantum algorithms, distributed computing, theoretical computer science, graph algorithms, parallel algorithms, computational complexity, graph theory, discrete mathematics, probability theory, stochastics, linear algebra, and quantum information-related theory.
Postdoc eligibility: a recent doctoral degree in theoretical computer science, mathematics, or physics; an outstanding publication record in leading conferences and journals. You may apply before the degree is formally awarded, as long as it is completed before the contract starts.
Doctoral student eligibility: a recent master’s degree in theoretical computer science, mathematics, or physics; excellent academic performance; and some demonstrated research experience during studies. You may also apply before graduation if the degree will be completed before the contract starts.
The team values expertise in graph algorithms, parallel algorithms, computational complexity theory, models of computing, automata theory, proof assistants such as Lean, computational techniques in TCS, and familiarity with modern AI tools. A good command of English is required. You do not need to already be an expert in distributed graph algorithms or quantum information theory if you have a strong mathematical background and are willing to learn.
Funding and contract: postdoc contracts are fixed-term for 1–3 years with a salary of 4229.48–4418.69 € per month. Doctoral student contracts are 2+2 years with a salary of 3168.20 € per month for the first two years and 3577.00 € per month for the final two years. Both include occupational health benefits. The positions are located at Aalto University’s Otaniemi campus in Espoo, Finland.
Application deadline: 2026-07-31. Apply via Aalto University’s Workday recruitment system. Postdoc applicants should submit a cover letter, CV with publications, research statement, and degree diplomas/transcripts. Doctoral applicants should submit a cover letter, CV with academic achievements and research experience, and degree diplomas/transcripts. Referee contact details will be requested in the application form.
Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
How to apply
