About this position

UCLA’s Center for Advanced Surgical and Interventional Technology (CASIT), within the Department of Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine, is recruiting a postdoctoral scholar to help advance AI and digital health innovation in a highly translational clinical environment.

The position focuses on building intelligent health technologies that move beyond benchmarks and into real-world healthcare. The scholar will work with clinicians, engineers, researchers, and industry partners on projects that combine multimodal health data such as wearable and sensor streams, medical images and video, speech, human movement, physiological signals, and clinical information.

Research themes include digital biomarkers, remote monitoring, precision health, clinical decision support, intelligent surgical systems, AI for brain and functional health, and digital interventions. The role spans methods such as computer vision, multimodal AI, machine learning, deep learning, foundation models, and agentic or generative AI, with an emphasis on clinically meaningful questions, prototype development, validation, and eventual real-world deployment.

CASIT’s broader portfolio includes AI-enabled surgical and interventional systems, wearable sensing, wound monitoring, telehealth, healthy aging, and functional resilience. The postdoctoral scholar will join a multidisciplinary setting designed to support cross-domain collaboration and translational research that can be validated in practice and improve patient outcomes.

Mentorship is provided by Dr. Bijan Najafi, Professor of Surgery and Research Director of CASIT, with opportunities to lead interdisciplinary projects, mentor trainees, and contribute to a growing research program at UCLA Health.

Funding details

Postdoctoral Scholar salary is based on the UC Salary Scales and determined by rank and step at appointment; see Table 23 for the applicable postdoctoral scholar scales.
