About this position
The University of California, Los Angeles is recruiting a Postdoctoral Scholar in AI and Quantum Computing within the Computer Science Department and the Center for Domain-Specific Computing.
The position is based in a UCLA research team led by Professors Jason Cong and Yizhou Sun. The postdoc will work closely with faculty, students, and collaborators on research that sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence and quantum computing, with an emphasis on algorithm design, implementation, and rigorous evaluation.
The advertised research directions span three closely connected themes: efficient quantum error correction and noise management; quantum algorithms under realistic errors; and quantum-assisted machine learning for scientific simulation. The first theme focuses on AI-driven decoding, qLDPC codes, noise prediction, fidelity estimation, and error mitigation. The second examines optimization, sampling, and many-body physics algorithms on early fault-tolerant quantum systems, including the impact of realistic error mechanisms and how compilation and control strategies can improve reliability. The third develops hybrid quantum-classical workflows for fermionic systems, chemistry, and molecular dynamics, including adaptive learning pipelines and uncertainty-aware quantum query strategies.
The role is not limited to theory: the selected researcher will translate research goals into concrete technical plans, implement algorithms, run simulations, establish reproducible benchmarks, and maintain documented research software. The postdoc will also mentor students, coordinate with collaborators, and contribute to papers, presentations, and project reports.
This is a research-intensive UCLA appointment in a highly interdisciplinary environment spanning AI, machine learning, quantum computing, and scientific simulation.

What's required
A Ph.D. in computer science, electrical or computer engineering, physics, applied mathematics, or a related field is required by the start date. Applicants should have a strong research background in AI/ML or quantum computing, demonstrated through publications, research software, or comparable technical achievements. Strong programming and mathematical skills, sound experimental judgment, a commitment to reproducible research, ability to lead a research project from problem formulation through implementation and evaluation, and clear communication and collaborative skills are required. Experience with the complementary area (AI or quantum) is encouraged, but expertise across every topic is not expected.
How to apply
Submit a CV, cover letter, brief research statement, up to three representative papers/software projects, and contact information for three references through the application portal. Use the Academic Jobs Online application link provided in the advert.
