About this position
The University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Economics of Coastal Hazards and Resilience in the Department of Economics and Finance within the Cameron School of Business.
The postdoctoral scholar will work with Professor Meghan Millea on the economics research thrust of the NSF-funded Coastal Hazards, Economic Prosperity, and Resilience (CHEER) research hub. CHEER brings together engineers, economists, and social scientists to study hurricane risk, recovery, and resilience in coastal communities, with particular emphasis on eastern North Carolina.
Research will examine household and community responses to hurricane risk, including insurance decisions, hazard mitigation, adaptation, and the economic consequences of disasters. Responsibilities include developing and applying quantitative economic methods, assembling and analyzing data, interpreting results, preparing manuscripts and presentations, and collaborating across institutions and disciplines. The role may also include proposal development, student mentoring, and engagement with community partners.
Applicants need a Ph.D. in Economics, Applied Economics, Environmental or Resource Economics, or a closely related discipline by the appointment start date. Strong candidates will have applied quantitative, econometric, or computational research experience and the ability to conduct independent research and communicate findings effectively. Preferred expertise includes environmental economics, natural hazards, disaster risk, insurance, adaptation, economic resilience, spatial analysis, economic modeling, computable general equilibrium methods, and large or geographically detailed datasets.
This is a 12-month, full-time temporary research appointment with possible renewal. Postdoctoral employees are eligible for postdoctoral medical insurance and paid leave. The position is based at the main UNCW campus in Wilmington, North Carolina, United States. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. EST on November 9, 2026.
