About this position

Postdoctoral Scholar – Anesthesia – Obal Lab

The Obal Lab in the Department of Anesthesia at the University of Iowa is recruiting a full-time postdoctoral scholar for research on G protein–coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling in cardiovascular disease. The work is based in Iowa City, United States.

The research uses patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from healthy individuals and patients with cardiovascular conditions to investigate GPCR function, single-molecule movement, and receptor–protein interactions in cell membranes. The program examines how receptor behavior changes in chronic diseases including heart failure and ischemic cardiomyopathy, with the goal of supporting targeted therapeutics and precision medicine.

A major component involves advanced nanoparticle technology to track individual GPCR molecules in cardiomyocytes and other cardiovascular cell types. Through collaboration with the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute, the lab has access to a large iPSC biobank supporting studies across diverse cardiovascular genotypes.

Applicants must have a PhD in physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry, physics, or a closely related discipline. Strong laboratory, analytical, organizational, writing, communication, and record-keeping skills are required, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Experience in single-molecule labeling, live-cell imaging, particle tracking, R, Python, MATLAB, stem-cell culture, or GPCR biology is advantageous.

The position is full time at 100% with a salary of $62,232 to commensurate. Applications require a CV, letters of interest, and contact information for three references. The posting remains open until the position is filled.
