About this position
University of California, Irvine is offering a postdoctoral scholar position in the Department of Urban Planning and Public Policy within the School of Social Ecology on a project examining wildfire recovery and sustainable building practices in disadvantaged and low-income communities in California.
The scholar will work on a multi-campus, community-engaged research project that brings together planning, policy, engineering, architectural, and community engagement expertise. The research combines technical analysis with local knowledge from residents and community organizations to strengthen rebuilding and recovery efforts after wildfires.
Project activities include developing and applying ground-truthing methodologies, building a database of existing building stock for selected study areas, conducting spatial analysis of wildfire-impacted areas, and co-designing community-led surveys and engagement processes. The work also includes overseeing data collection during community partner activities and analyzing how rebuilding can incorporate sustainability and wildfire-resilience goals.
The postdoctoral scholar will collaborate closely with Professor Douglas Houston and contribute to research, publications, presentations, reporting, and knowledge sharing. The role is designed to support work at the intersection of disaster recovery policy, sustainable construction, and community-based research, with an emphasis on the needs and lived experiences of affected communities.
The appointment is full-time and spans 33 months, with an in-person presence strongly preferred.
