About this position
UK Research and Innovation is recruiting a Postdoctoral Scientist in Neurobiology to work at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, United Kingdom. The three-year, full-time position is based in the Kornfeld and Jefferis groups and focuses on understanding how behaviours are encoded in the brain’s synaptic networks.
The successful researcher will develop and apply novel approaches for large-scale connectomics, mapping and analysing synaptic connections in vertebrate and invertebrate brains. The project aims to link synaptic networks to behavioural outputs and provide mechanistic insight into how learned behaviours are maintained and accessed. The post is jointly supervised by Dr Joergen Kornfeld and Dr Greg Jefferis.
Methods may include high-resolution 3D electron microscopy, expansion microscopy, tissue preparation, imaging, data acquisition, and analysis of large-scale microscopy datasets. The role also involves presenting research, preparing papers, contributing to laboratory discussions, supporting public engagement, training PhD students and colleagues, and collaborating across the LMB.
Applicants should have a PhD in neuroscience, neurobiology, or a related field, or expect to complete one within six months. Experience in connectomics, neuroanatomy, electron microscopy, expansion microscopy, or microscopy data analysis is desirable. Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, independent-working, and teamwork skills are required, along with evidence of research achievement and publication contributions.
The salary is £42,694 per annum. The role is a three-year training and development position with formal MRC courses, external professional development, and one-to-one supervision and training. Applications should include a CV and covering letter submitted online through the UKRI Careers portal by 11 November 2026.
