About this position

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) at Uppsala University offers an international research and teaching environment with broad expertise in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, tumour biology, comparative genetics, functional genomics, immunology, bacteriology and virology.

This postdoctoral project is focused on understanding how different antibiotics affect metabolism and the production of mutagenic and carcinogenic compounds in pathogenic bacteria. The successful candidate will investigate the genetic and physiological mechanisms that drive the synthesis of these compounds, measure their levels, and examine how they influence eukaryotic cells.

The role is based in a research setting where fundamental microbiological work is connected to questions of health and disease in both animals and humans. The project is part of a research effort funded by the Wallenberg Foundation (KAW) and includes interaction with group members and external collaborators. Some teaching may be included.

The position is hosted at IMBIM, Uppsala University, in Uppsala.

Funding details

The position is part of a research project funded by the Wallenberg Foundation (KAW). The appointment is full-time for two years.

What's required

A PhD in microbiology is required, preferably awarded no more than three years before the application deadline unless special reasons apply. Applicants should have strong knowledge of bacterial genetics, metabolism and virulence, and experience with microscopy (SEM, TEM, confocal), biochemical analytical methods (GC-MS, LC-MS, HPLC), intracellular metabolism and bacterial virulence. Very good oral and written English skills are required, and the advert emphasizes strong motivation, responsibility, scientific enthusiasm, initiative, teamwork, communication, flexibility and independent problem-solving.
