About this position

The University of Oldenburg is hiring a Research Associate / PhD Candidate in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) for the DEUS research project. The appointment is in the Human-Computer Interaction Group and focuses on smart homes, pervasive computing, interactive systems, and human-centered AI.

The project explores how people understand and control connected environments made up of devices, sensors, automations, home robots, and AI-based systems. The successful candidate will build on research into how users form mental models of smart home ecosystems and develop everyday troubleshooting strategies. The work will include designing interaction concepts that help people understand, configure, and adapt their environments, as well as creating new approaches to diagnosing and fixing problems through voice, gesture, tangible interfaces, augmented reality, and related technologies.

Research will involve studies in a fully equipped smart home laboratory and in the field. The candidate will pursue a PhD in HCI, contribute to teaching, and help advance people-centered approaches to pervasive and automated computing.

Applicants should hold a Master's degree in Computer Science, HCI, or a related discipline, with solid HCI knowledge and experience conducting user studies. Curiosity about collaboration between people and smart systems is important. Experience with smart homes, prototyping, or human-centered AI is welcome but not required.

The position is a three-year Research Associate / PhD candidate role at E13 TV-L, 100% employment, with part-time work possible. Applications should be submitted by December 10, 2026, using the subject line “DEUS.”
