About this position
This research contract is hosted by the Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologie dell’Informazione “Alessandro Faedo” of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche in Pisa. The position is part of the self-funded research programme AIMH 2.0 – AI-based Management of Media, Textual, and Humanities Data 2.0, under the scientific guidance of Dr. Giuseppe Amato.
The successful candidate will work on artificial intelligence and deep learning for visual analysis and pattern recognition. One main direction is class-agnostic counting, developing multimodal AI models that can count objects from arbitrary categories using only a few examples, with the goal of building flexible and generalisable open-world counting systems. A second direction explores bio-inspired learning approaches, including Hebbian learning as an alternative to backpropagation, together with the use of biological neuronal cultures as a computational substrate.
The project also addresses the challenge of limited annotated data through synthetic datasets generated in virtual environments, domain adaptation, unsupervised learning, and methods designed to handle noisy labels. The research sits in the Computer Science area and is embedded in the ISTI-CNR research environment in Pisa.
