About this position

The Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), through the Institute of Intelligent Industrial Systems and Technologies for Advanced Manufacturing (STIIMA) in Bari, is offering one research contract within a programme in biomedical engineering, biomedical signal analysis, human movement study, and technologies for health and well-being.

The position is centered on the analysis of EMG signals and muscle synergies. The selected researcher will work on the acquisition of multichannel EMG data from healthy participants and patients during motor tasks under different experimental conditions, as well as on the development and validation of methods for signal preprocessing, time-domain and frequency-domain analysis, and extraction of quantitative indices of muscle activity.

The project also includes the identification and analysis of muscle synergies to characterise motor coordination strategies across experimental conditions and populations. This involves factorisation and decomposition methods for multichannel EMG, estimation of temporal activation coefficients, and assessment of the complexity, stability, and reproducibility of synergies. The call also mentions kinematic-muscular synergies aimed at relating muscle activity to movement kinematics.

The research is linked to the funded projects GEMINI and GENESI, both focused on digital twins for neurological disease and human health, together with co-financing under Next Industry for the Next Society.

The work is under the scientific responsibility of Dr. Ing. Lorenzo Molinari Tosatti at CNR-STIIMA.

Funding details

Annual gross compensation for the institution: €48,000. The contract is funded through projects GEMINI (ID 622_QIIR112_00028), GENESI (ID 622_QIIR113b_00027), and co-financing DIT.AD008.270.001.

What's required

Applicants must hold a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, including degrees earned abroad, or be enrolled in the third year of that PhD with the degree expected within six months of the call date, or otherwise have a scientific-professional CV suitable for research. Candidates must have civil and political rights, no disqualifying criminal convictions, and comply with military service requirements where applicable. English knowledge is required, and non-Italian candidates must also have adequate Italian knowledge. Foreign degree holders must obtain recognition/equivalence or present an equivalence declaration if selected.
