This PhD project investigates how forest carbon uptake is changing worldwide under climate change and disturbance. The successful candidate will combine atmospheric CO₂ observations, Earth Observation products, and numerical models to quantify how the global forest carbon sink varies across continents and over time. The work focuses on integrating multiple data streams into an existing prototype modelling framework and extending its data assimilation capacity so it can use large Earth Observatio...

About this position

Research contract at the CNR Institute of Marine Sciences (ISMAR), Venice, in the area of oceanographic modelling. The selected researcher will join a project on coastal oceanography and river–sea interactions within the self-funded SHIFEM and SHYFEM2 research programmes at the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche.

The position is centred on the development and application of unstructured oceanographic models, especially for hydrodynamics and lagrangian analyses, to study the dynamics of coastal and transition systems. The work includes building finite-element computational grids, preparing simulation set-ups and forcing/boundary inputs, collecting and using field and satellite observations for calibration and validation, and analysing model outputs for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

The scientific direction is provided by Dr. Christian Ferrarin. The research sits within the broader scientific area of Earth system sciences and environmental technologies, and is hosted by the Venice site of ISMAR, CNR’s marine sciences institute.

  • Development and application of non-structured oceanographic models for coastal and river-mouth environments
  • Construction of finite-element grids and model simulation setups
  • Use of in situ and satellite observations for calibration and validation
  • Analysis, interpretation, and publication of modelling results

The call is for one research contract based at ISMAR Venezia, with work focused on coastal hydrodynamics and the interaction between rivers and the sea.
