About this position
The University of Warwick is recruiting a Research Fellow in the Department of Physics within the Semiconductor Research Group for experimental work on Group-IV semiconductor materials science. The project focuses on advanced SiGe and Ge-based semiconductor heterostructures, with particular emphasis on the compressively strained germanium-on-silicon (cs-GoS) platform.
This is a laboratory-based, on-site position in Coventry, United Kingdom. The successful candidate will carry out hands-on characterization of semiconductor materials and devices using techniques such as TEM, SEM, AFM, HR-XRD, XRR, FTIR, Hall-effect, resistivity, and C-V/I-V measurements. The role also involves experimental planning, data analysis, interpretation, publication writing, presentations, and collaboration with colleagues working on epitaxial growth, device fabrication, and transport measurements.
Applicants should have a PhD near completion or awarded. Strong practical experience in experimental materials science or semiconductor physics is essential, especially with SiGe epitaxy, CVD growth, semiconductor device processing, and quantitative interpretation of structural and physical characterization data. The post is initially offered on a 12-month fixed-term basis, with possible extension subject to funding and project needs.
Salary: £36,320–£46,970 per annum. If the PhD has not yet been conferred, the appointment may begin at Research Assistant level (£35,302 per annum) until the PhD award is confirmed.
Application deadline: Tuesday 3 November 2026, 11:59pm (UK time). Apply online with a CV and cover letter. The cover letter should explain your motivation and how you meet the essential and desirable criteria. Applications may be reviewed on a rolling basis, so early submission is encouraged.

What's required
Applicants should have a PhD near completion or awarded; if the PhD is not yet conferred, appointment may be made at Research Assistant level until evidence of award is provided. The role requires substantial hands-on laboratory experience in experimental materials science or semiconductor physics, especially structural and physical characterization of Group-IV semiconductor materials and devices. Strong practical experience with TEM or high-resolution TEM, AFM, HR-XRD, FTIR, SEM, XRR, Hall-effect and resistivity measurements, and C-V/I-V characterization is highly relevant. Familiarity with SiGe epitaxy, CVD growth, semiconductor device processing, epitaxial heterostructures, and the cs-GoS platform is essential. Candidates must be able to work independently and collaboratively, plan experiments, interpret data quantitatively, and communicate results effectively.
How to apply
Apply online by the closing date with your CV and cover letter attached. The cover letter should explain your motivation and how you meet the essential and desirable criteria. Applications may be reviewed on a rolling basis, so early submission is encouraged.
