About this position
The University of Warwick’s Semiconductor Research Group in the Department of Physics is recruiting a Research Fellow for an experimental project on semiconductor materials science, Si/SiGe heterostructures, and cryogenic electrical characterisation.
The role supports a collaborative EPSRC–NSF project with the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), USA, focused on ultralow-noise SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) for quantum technology and beyond. The research examines how epitaxial layer design, alloy composition, strain, doping, interfaces, and defects affect electrical behaviour and cryogenic device performance.
You will work with Warwick-grown Si/SiGe heterostructures using reduced-pressure chemical vapour deposition (RP-CVD) facilities and perform independent I-V, C-V, and G-V measurements from room temperature down to about 2 K. The project also involves analysing bias-, frequency-, and temperature-dependent effects, identifying artefacts, and linking electrical results with structural and materials characterisation such as XTEM/TEM, HR-XRD, and AFM.
This is a laboratory-based, full-time, on-site position at the University of Warwick in Coventry, UK. Remote or hybrid working is not available. The appointment is fixed-term until 30 September 2029.
Applicants should have a PhD, or be near completion of a PhD, in semiconductor physics, materials science, materials engineering, or a related field. Essential experience includes substantial hands-on semiconductor electrical measurement work, low-temperature instrumentation, and practical materials characterisation. Experience with Si/Ge/SiGe epitaxy, heterojunctions, or cryogenic electronics is especially welcome.
Salary is £36,320–£46,970 per annum. If the PhD has not yet been awarded, the appointment may initially be made at Research Assistant level (£35,302 per annum) until the PhD is confirmed.
Apply online via the University of Warwick jobs portal by 10 December 2026, 11:59pm (UK). Submit a CV and cover letter explaining your motivation and how you meet the essential and desirable criteria. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and the vacancy may close early.

What's required
Applicants should have a PhD, or be near completion of a PhD, in semiconductor physics, materials science, materials engineering or a related discipline. Essential experience includes substantial hands-on work with semiconductor current-voltage (I-V), capacitance-voltage (C-V) and conductance-voltage (G-V) measurements, practical low-temperature electrical measurements from room temperature to about 2 K, and the ability to set up, operate, troubleshoot and interpret instrumentation. Candidates should have a strong understanding of semiconductor transport and junction physics, including doping, carrier freeze-out, leakage, contact effects, admittance and interface/defect responses. They should also have hands-on materials characterisation experience with at least two complementary techniques among XTEM and HR-XRD; AFM, SEM, FIB, SIMS, EDX, XRR, FTIR or Hall effect experience is advantageous. Relevant Si/Ge/SiGe epitaxy, heterojunctions or cryogenic electronics experience is welcome.
How to apply
Apply online through the University of Warwick jobs portal. Submit your CV and cover letter by the closing date. Apply early because applications are reviewed throughout the advertising period and the vacancy may close early.
