About this position

The University of Birmingham is hiring a full-time, fixed-term Research Fellow in the School of Engineering, based in Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK. The appointment runs until October 2027 and is funded by the UKRI EPSRC FractureFix International Centre to Centre Award.

The project investigates secondary osteoporosis and bone fracture, with research focused on novel interventions to prevent or reduce fracture effects. The successful researcher will help define target product profiles, develop minimally invasive approaches using smart materials and alternative manufacturing methods, and evaluate designs through advanced testing scenarios.

The role sits within Medical Engineering and includes research on secondary osteoporosis and fracture, novel coatings for improved implant-bone integration, materials characterization, biocompatibility and data interpretation. Relevant techniques may include scratch testing, nano-indentation, SEM/TEM cross-section analysis, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electrochemical analysis and nano-impaction, together with cell culture methodologies.

Candidates should hold a first degree in Mechanical Engineering or an adjacent discipline and a relevant higher degree, or equivalent qualifications. The post requires medical engineering research experience, strong experimental materials or coating science skills, a publication record, analytical ability and the capacity to work independently while collaborating with the project team. Duties also include publishing, presenting research, contributing to funding bids, supervising students, knowledge transfer and research administration.

The maximum Grade 7 salary is £38,784. The closing date is 10 November 2026. Informal enquiries can be sent to Richard Hall at [email protected].
