About this position

Research Fellow (Brazil) at the University of Warwick, Department of Sociology, on the ERC-funded RAIDS: Religious Authority in Extractive Industry Struggles project led by Professor Claire Blencowe.

The project examines the role of religion, religious authority, and spiritual activism in conflicts around mining and extractive industries, with a specific research focus on Brazil. The fellow will work closely with mine-affected communities and contribute to participatory, community-based research on extractivism, environmental justice, colonialism, racism, political ecology, and marginalised or Indigenous communities.

This is a full-time, fixed-term post for 24 months starting in January 2027. The role includes a preparatory period for literature review, ethics clearance, and training; a year of empirical research using interviews, participant observation, participatory workshops, and online investigative analysis; and a final period focused on outputs such as a lead-authored journal article, data packages, news stories, website content, and a co-authored book.

Eligibility highlights: PhD status or near completion is required. Strong experience in qualitative research methods is expected, along with the ability to work sensitively and ethically with communities affected by environmental harm, displacement, marginalisation, or political conflict. Expertise in Brazil or Latin America, extractive industries, religion, Indigenous or marginalised communities, environmental justice, racism, colonialism, or political ecology is desirable. Portuguese-language research ability is strongly desirable.

Funding and pay: ERC-funded research position with salary from £35,608 to £46,049 per annum. Applicants near PhD submission may initially be appointed at Research Assistant level on £34,610 until the PhD is awarded.

Deadline: 5 November 2026. Apply online with a CV and cover letter, and include two proposed extractive-industry struggles as case studies, explaining why they are promising and why you are a good fit to work with those communities.
