About this position
The Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) is offering a three-year postdoctoral position for a Research Scientist in Agricultural Climate Intelligence. The role centers on developing advanced crop simulation models that integrate mechanistic and neural network components, aiming to forecast crop growth under future climate conditions. This research builds on Luke’s established expertise and is embedded within a vibrant international research environment, including collaboration as part of a Horizon Europe project.
The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team, working closely with European research groups and engaging stakeholders such as industry partners and farmers. Responsibilities include implementing high-performance hybrid crop growth models, contributing to scientific publications, project reporting, and coordination, as well as evaluating the impact and applicability of developed solutions. The position offers a unique opportunity to advance research in crop modeling and agricultural decision-making, with a strong focus on preparedness for climate risks.
Applicants should hold a recently completed doctoral degree (typically within the past 5 years) in a relevant field, with proven ability to publish in high-quality scientific journals. Essential skills include competence in crop model development (process-based or machine learning methods), strong programming abilities in Python, R, Julia, C++, or Matlab, and project management experience. Additional expertise in deep neural networks, high performance computing, and geospatial data processing is advantageous. Excellent written and spoken English, strong collaboration skills, and the ability to work independently are required.
Luke offers a supportive and innovative work environment, with flexible hours, mobile work options within Finland, lunch benefits, and support for sports, culture, or commuting. The position-specific salary is EUR 3596.42 per month, with a personal performance component (up to 50% of base salary, typically 15-20%). Long vacations and professional development through the Luke Doctoral and Postdoctoral Programme are provided. Security clearance and sanctions checks may be required for selected candidates.
Applications should be submitted electronically via the Valtiolle.fi service or by post to the registry office, clearly stating the position ID. The deadline for applications is 16 June 2026. Late applications will not be considered. For further information, contact Research Professor Matti Pastell ([email protected]) or Group Manager Hanna Huitu ([email protected]).
Luke is committed to sustainability, diversity, and equality, fostering a cheerful and respectful culture where everyone’s input is valued. The institute operates under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Finland, supporting public policy and sustainable business based on renewable natural resources.
