About this position
The University of Edinburgh invites applications for its Scandinavian Studies MScR, a postgraduate research master’s programme in the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures. The programme is designed for students who want to complete an independent research project in Scandinavian languages, literatures, cultures and the wider Nordic region. It can serve as preparation for a PhD or as a standalone research qualification.
Students may study full-time for one year or part-time for two years. The programme offers two pathways: two supervised 6,000-word research assignments plus a 15,000-word dissertation, or a single 30,000-word dissertation. Both pathways include 40 credits of research skills and methods training and supervision from an experienced academic.
Potential research interests include 19th-, 20th- and 21st-century literature; cultural relations and transfer; language diversity and sociolinguistics; language history and dialectology; literary translation; Nordic and Arctic geopolitics; onomastics; place and identity; postcolonial, migration and transnational topics; Scandinavian cultural history; Scottish–Scandinavian historical relations; and Viking studies. Students join a supportive research community with seminars, film screenings, festivals, visiting speakers and access to extensive libraries, collections and research networks.
Applicants should hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in a related subject and have near-native competence in the relevant language or languages. Projects using Scandinavian-language materials require CEFR C1 or higher. Application materials include a 500-word personal statement, research proposal, approximately 3,000-word writing sample, degree certificates and transcripts, two references, and evidence of English-language proficiency. The application fee is waived: there is no fee to apply.
The programme starts on 13 September 2027, with an application deadline of 30 June 2027. No specific scholarship or guaranteed funding is provided; students should plan for tuition, accommodation and living expenses and explore external funding opportunities.
