About this position
Social and Political Science MScR at the University of Edinburgh is a postgraduate research master’s programme for students preparing to undertake doctoral-level research in social or political science. It combines structured research training with an independent research project supported by a supervisor.
The programme is available full time for one year or part time for two years, beginning in September 2027. Research interests may include African Studies, Global Health Policy, International Development, Medical Anthropology, Politics and International Relations, Social and Public Policy, Social Anthropology, Social Work, Sociology, Socio-cultural Studies, and South Asian Studies.
Students develop skills in data collection, data analysis, research design, and academic research practice. The programme culminates in a dissertation, which may take the form of a small independent study or a pilot or full research proposal for a future PhD project. Students can also participate in seminars, workshops, professional development activities, and research training courses recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council.
Applicants must normally hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent. Before applying, prospective students are required to contact potential supervisors to discuss their proposed research and confirm that suitable supervision is available. Applications should include a personal statement, relevant knowledge or training skills, two references, academic transcripts, and, where applicable, a research proposal, details of published work, and evidence of English-language proficiency. Accepted English qualifications include IELTS Academic, TOEFL-iBT, C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency, Oxford ELLT, and Oxford Test of English Advanced.
The application deadline is 29 June 2027 for the programme starting on 13 September 2027. There is no application fee. Funding is not guaranteed, although applicants may explore ESRC 1+3 Studentships, scholarships, bursaries, loans, and other postgraduate funding sources. Students should also budget for tuition fees, accommodation, and living costs in Edinburgh.
