About this position
The University of Edinburgh’s Edinburgh College of Art invites applications for the Sound Design MScR, a postgraduate research programme beginning in September 2027. The degree is available full-time over one year or part-time over two years and is based at the Lauriston campus.
The programme is designed for applicants with creative and/or professional experience in sound design, sonic art, electronic composition or related fields. Research may explore sound design, sonic art, digital composition and performance, digital audio and media technology, creative coding for sound, film/TV/radio sound, experimental game audio, sound software, or sound and music philosophy. Students develop a substantial research project that may combine written work with a creative portfolio, such as an album, sound installation, film or animation soundtrack, experimental game audio project, or documented sonic experiments.
Applicants normally need a UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in a relevant subject, although relevant professional experience may also be considered. Applications require a 500–1,000-word research proposal, a portfolio with at least three pieces of original work, a personal statement, two references, academic transcripts and certificates, and English-language evidence where applicable. Applicants should identify and contact a potential supervisor before submitting their application.
The application deadline is 30 June 2027 for the programme starting on 13 September 2027. No specific studentship or scholarship funding is included in this listing; applicants should investigate University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh College of Art funding separately. Tuition fees, living costs and any additional project expenses are generally the student’s responsibility.
