About this position

Osaka University’s Institute for Radiation Science and Technology is recruiting a full-time specially appointed researcher for a project on high-speed oxygen atomic beams and surface scattering.

The work is part of the Space Strategy Fund project “SX Core Area Development Research ‘SX-ARK’ (Motion and Control).” The laboratory is developing a surface scattering device using supersonic molecular beams and building an experimental system based on laser detonation technology to generate a high-speed oxygen atom beam and measure its surface scattering with high precision.

This position is strongly oriented toward experimental research and device development. Duties include improving vacuum devices and molecular beam/laser systems, constructing measurement systems, and acquiring and analyzing experimental data. The post is especially relevant to aerospace engineering, nanotechnology and materials, thin films, surface and interface properties, and composite materials/interfaces.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have research experience in the relevant field. A doctoral degree is desirable, as is Japanese language ability sufficient for work duties. Experience with high-vacuum equipment and measurement programming is also desirable.

This is a fixed-term, non-tenure-track, full-time contract position with an annual income of 5 million yen or more; the listed basic annual salary is 5,178,600 yen. The appointment is scheduled to begin on 2026-12-01, or as soon as possible thereafter, and runs until 2028-03-31, with possible renewal depending on performance and project continuation.

Work location: Toyonaka Campus, Osaka Prefecture, Japan. Application deadline: 2026-11-30. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and may close early once a candidate is selected.

To apply, download the Osaka University educational and research positions form, prepare the required documents, and send them by email to [email protected] with the subject line “Application for Specially Appointed Researcher,” or mail the documents by registered post to the listed Osaka University address.
