About this position

National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), Japan is recruiting a tenure-track fixed-term research fellow in the Social Systems Domain for research aimed at the social implementation of environmental research results toward a sustainable society.

The call is broad and interdisciplinary. Example themes include environmental policy, environmental economics, environmental sociology, environmental ethics, behavioral economics, international policy, political science, systems engineering, resource and energy engineering, and mathematical informatics. The successful candidate will collaborate with researchers working on observation, experiments, and model development, and will also engage with stakeholders such as government, private companies, and citizens to help translate research into practice. The position is open to applicants with a master’s degree or higher (or equivalent ability), strong interest in policy and social implementation, and the ability to communicate research in Japanese and English. JLPT N1 or higher is required.

This is a full-time position with an annual salary of approximately 7–10 million yen (including bonuses), plus standard benefits. The appointment starts on 2027-04-01, with tenure-track fixed-term terms up to 2032-03 depending on appointment type and performance. The work location is Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan.

What's required
