About this position

Two postdoctoral positions are available in Photonics for Quantum at the University of Twente, based in the Adaptive Quantum Optics (AQO) chair within the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology. The project sits in the P4Q consortium and focuses on photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for quantum communication and quantum networking.

The research combines integrated photonic design, hybrid integration, and quantum-optical characterization. A central technical challenge is the integration of high-brightness III–V photonic-crystal single-photon sources, developed by French partners, with low-loss SiN photonic routing circuits. The successful candidate(s) will contribute to circuit design, hybrid integration, fabrication-related work, and detailed experimental characterization.

The role is highly collaborative. You will work with industrial and research partners in the P4Q consortium, including Thales, LioniX International, TNO, and QuiX Quantum. Experimental activities will also involve close collaboration with the Applied Nanophotonics (ANP) department at the University of Twente.

Beyond laboratory work, the project aims to demonstrate the technology in realistic field settings. The team is developing and using dark-fiber links for quantum-network experiments, including connections between the University of Twente and Saxion University of Applied Sciences, and a planned link toward the University of Münster. This enables work on advanced quantum-communication concepts such as authenticated quantum communication.

The position is well suited to researchers with a strong background in physics, integrated photonics, and (quantum) optics, who enjoy interdisciplinary and internationally oriented work. Applicants should have excellent English-language skills; Dutch or German is an advantage.

The appointment is full-time for a duration to be discussed, with a maximum length of 2.5 years. Employment conditions follow the Dutch university collective labour agreement (CAO-NU). The salary range is €4,422 to €5,760 gross per month, and the package includes a holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, pension scheme, leave entitlement, campus sports facilities, parental leave options, and career-development support.
