About this position
CoastClim at the University of Helsinki is recruiting two postdoctoral researchers in coastal marine science. The positions sit within the Centre for Coastal Ecosystem and Climate Change Research, a strategic collaboration between the University of Helsinki and Stockholm University. The researchers will be based at Tvärminne Zoological Station, joining an international and interdisciplinary environment that combines marine ecology, biogeochemistry and atmospheric science.
The overarching research theme is how biodiversity and ecosystem state shape coastal carbon cycling, greenhouse gases, volatile organic compounds and climate feedbacks. CoastClim’s central hypothesis is that healthy and degraded ecosystems differ in how biodiversity regulates carbon production, storage, transformation and release. The successful candidates will work closely with a PhD collegium of five doctoral researchers and with scientific staff across the programme.
Position 1 focuses on coastal sediment microbial ecology and biogeochemistry. The postdoctoral researcher will develop an independent project on how benthic biodiversity influences carbon processing in healthy and degraded coastal ecosystems, and contribute to joint field and laboratory experiments on biodiversity change, disturbance and multiple stressors. Possible directions include microbial controls of sediment carbon mineralization, methane production and oxidation, redox-sensitive processes, sediment–water exchange, and climate-relevant volatile organic compounds.
Position 2 focuses on experimental marine ecology and biodiversity–ecosystem functioning. This postdoctoral researcher will use field experiments and quantitative ecological analysis to understand how biodiversity regulates carbon cycling in natural coastal ecosystems. The role has a strong field component and offers opportunities to combine in situ disturbance and biodiversity manipulation with measurements of sediment and community carbon stocks, organic-matter processing, ecosystem metabolism and related biogeochemical responses.
Both positions offer scope for independent research, collaboration across ecological and biogeochemical disciplines, publication in leading journals and development of future funding applications. Work will be centered at Tvärminne Zoological Station, which provides access to coastal habitats, research vessels, scientific diving, laboratory facilities, experimental infrastructure and long-term environmental observations.

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD by the beginning of employment. For Position 1, a PhD in microbial ecology, marine biogeochemistry, environmental microbiology, aquatic ecology or a closely related discipline is required, along with demonstrated expertise in coastal or aquatic sediment processes or transferable microbial/biogeochemical methods, ability to design rigorous experiments, analyze complex datasets using statistical software such as R or Python or bioinformatics tools, integrate molecular and biogeochemical information, and write scientific English well; collaborative and communication skills are also expected. For Position 2, a PhD in marine ecology, benthic ecology, experimental ecology or a related field is required, together with practical SCUBA/scientific-diving experience, competence in experimental design and marine fieldwork organization, strong quantitative and statistical skills preferably in R, Python or Matlab, a solid publication record, excellent written English, and the ability to develop and communicate independent research ideas. The advert notes that applicants are not expected to have all listed skills, but methodological depth, quantitative independence and interdisciplinary teamwork are valued.
