University of Graz is advertising a University Assistant with a Ph.D. (m/f/d) position in the Department of History, linked to the section for Cultural and Gender History. This is a postdoctoral salaried position rather than a PhD studentship, and it is based in Graz, Austria.

The role combines research, teaching, project development, and academic service. The successful candidate will develop and implement a research project in the field of Gender History, contribute to international and interdisciplinary research and publication projects, support networking activities and research groups, and participate in public outreach and organizational work. Teaching duties include independent teaching in the BA/MA History programmes and History teacher education, as well as exams and student supervision.

A particular focus is the cross-faculty doctoral forum “Interdisciplinary Gender Studies”, where the postholder will support administration and coordination of lecturers, students, and invited guests. The position also involves engagement with university projects, collaborations, evaluation measures, and related administrative tasks.

Applicants must hold a completed doctorate in Modern Gender History and/or Contemporary History. The profile sought includes a strong research record in historical gender studies, with possible emphasis on the history of masculinities, war, violence, political identities, historical spatial perspectives, care relationships, and/or Public History. Experience in inter- and transdisciplinary research contexts, publications and conference presentations, third-party funded projects, and university teaching is expected. Excellent German and English are required, alongside strong teamwork and communication skills.

The contract is initially 1 year with the option of extension up to a total of 4 years. The full-time annual gross salary starts at € 70,200.20 under salary category B1 with PhD, and higher pay may be possible depending on qualifications and experience. The expected start date is 2026-10-01. The application deadline is 2026-09-22.

Applications must be submitted through the university’s web-based applicant tool. Required documents include an academic CV, letter of motivation, publication and presentation list, one published article (PDF), a project outline of the planned research project (maximum five pages), and supporting certificates including language proficiency proof.
