About this position
The Visiting Scholars at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) program offers short-term, structured appointments for researchers, educators, and professionals who want to gain exposure to ORNL’s research environment, facilities, and mission-oriented work.
Participants work on research or technical activities under the guidance of an ORNL mentor or collaborator. The program is designed to strengthen collaborations between ORNL staff and visiting scholars, with activities that may include research collaboration, curriculum development, technical upskilling, or other lab-identified engagement areas.
This opportunity is open to a broad range of experienced applicants, including postdoctoral fellows, faculty members, pre-college educators, established scientists, engineers, and other professionals. Appointments are typically hosted onsite in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, with limited remote participation possible in some cases.
The appointment is administered through ORISE and is explicitly not intended as temporary staffing, employment, or a substitute for a formal ORNL postdoctoral appointment. It is a visiting scholar program focused on professional learning, collaboration, and mission-aligned research engagement at a major U.S. national laboratory.
