About this position
WRAIR Biomedical Technology Transfer Fellowship at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), part of the U.S. Department of Defense, offers an immersive experience in biomedical innovation and technology transfer. The fellowship is based in Silver Spring, Maryland, with an option to participate off-site as needed and approved.
The selected participant will work with WRAIR’s Office of Research and Technology Applications, where the focus is on the policies, laws, and agreements that support technology transfer for biomedical product development at federal laboratories. The project centers on how scientific discoveries move from government research into wider use through collaboration with academia, private research groups, and the pharmaceutical industry.
Under mentor guidance, the fellow will gain practical exposure to the development and execution of research and collaboration agreements, including confidential disclosure agreements, material transfer agreements, cooperative research and development agreements, and clinical trials agreements. The role also includes reviewing new inventions reported by WRAIR scientists, assessing them for patenting or licensing potential, and learning how intellectual property strategies are aligned with societal needs.
The fellowship also provides experience in analyzing patent portfolios, understanding biomedical scientific portfolios, and identifying inventions for consideration by the Invention Evaluation Committee. In addition, the participant will build scientific relationships across federal and non-federal entities while learning how government agencies support innovation across diverse research and development portfolios.
WRAIR describes itself as DoD’s premier research enterprise for infectious diseases, brain health, and performance optimization, with research spanning basic science, applied science, and animal and human subjects studies to deliver lifesaving products for the Warfighter. Areas of focus include tropical infectious diseases, HIV, battlefield medical care, and post-traumatic stress disorders.
The appointment is a twelve-month research fellowship and may be renewed depending on funding, project assignment, program rules, and participant availability.
