The University of Nottingham is offering a fully funded PhD studentship for UK students focused on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), urinary tract infections (UTIs), and exploring non-antibiotic treatment options. The project will utilize a cutting-edge 3D cell culture model of the bladder to investigate how methenamine and oestrogen can be used to prevent UTIs, their interactions with antibiotics, and their impact on the development of antimicrobial resistance in realistic environments. This research aims to improve patient outcomes and transform UTI treatment strategies. The project encompasses a range of academic study areas, including cell culture, bioinformatics, microbiology, molecular biology, and imaging. The supervisory team includes researchers from the University of Nottingham, Warwick, Manchester, and Nottingham Trent University, providing a collaborative and multidisciplinary environment. Applicants must be UK students eligible for full funding and able to start by 1st July. A strong background in cell culture, bioinformatics, microbiology, molecular biology, or imaging is desirable. The deadline for applications is 27th February 2026. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Assistant Professor Alasdair Hubbard for informal discussions about the project. This opportunity is ideal for students interested in AMR, One Health, and innovative approaches to infectious disease research. The position is fully funded, though specific stipend and tuition details are not provided. For more information, candidates should refer to the University of Nottingham and reach out to the supervisor via LinkedIn.
