Applications are open for a SWBio DTP-funded PhD project at the University of Bristol titled “Characterisation and Inhibition of Snake Venom Metalloproteinases for Next-Generation Antivenom.” This PhD sits at the interface of biology , medical science , and biomedical engineering , with a strong research focus on snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs) , antivenom development , protein engineering , nanobody discovery , blood coagulation , platelet biology , and venom research . The project aims to develop innovative approaches to neutralise SVMPs, which are key drivers of snakebite pathology. Training mentioned in the announcement includes eukaryotic protein expression , ribosome display , protein engineering , and functional haemostasis assays . The project is co-supervised by Prof. Alastair Poole and Christiane Berger-Schaffitzel , and the post was shared by Prof. Berger-Schaffitzel. This is a PhD opening rather than a postdoctoral or master’s opportunity. The post states that applications are open now and gives a deadline of midday, Wednesday 2 December . Funding is through the SWBio DTP ; no stipend amount or additional financial details are included in the post. Prospective applicants should review the project description and the SWBio projects page, then apply using the SWBio application route before the deadline. If you are interested in antibody engineering, toxin biology, haemostasis, or translational antivenom research, this is a highly relevant doctoral opportunity.
