Postdoctoral Position in Structural Geology and Geothermal Exploration at the University of Lausanne

University of Lausanne is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher in structural geology and geothermal exploration within the Institute of Earth Sciences (ISTE), Faculty of Geosciences and Environment. The project focuses on characterizing and analyzing fault and fracture systems for geothermal exploration in the Swiss Molasse Basin , with particular attention to Jurassic and Cretaceous carbonate formations beneath the basin. The successful candidate will develop a regional synthesis of fault/fracture systems in Vaud and build a conceptual model of fault and fracture typology and density/intensity in target reservoirs. The work combines field geology , brittle tectonics , outcrop analogues , and analysis of multidisciplinary datasets including digital outcrop models, 2D/3D seismic data, and borehole geophysical data. The position is embedded in the Deformation and Tectonics group and involves collaboration with GEOOL and the Canton of Vaud (DGE-GEODES). This is a two-year postdoctoral opportunity, with an expected start date of 2026-07-01 or upon agreement. The role is primarily research-focused (85%) with up to 15% teaching assistance in Bachelor’s and Master’s courses related to structural geology, digital geology, and/or field mapping. Flexible working arrangements, including an 80% activity rate, may be possible. Eligibility highlights include a PhD in geology, geophysics, or a related science/engineering field; strong research ability; confidence in structural and field geology; and good written/spoken English. Knowledge of the Jura Mountains, Swiss Molasse Basin, or geothermal projects is considered an advantage. Applications from candidates of all backgrounds are encouraged. Deadline: 2026-05-21 at 23:59 CEST. Applicants should submit a PDF application with a cover letter, CV, diploma or PhD defence confirmation, and referee contacts via the university application website.
