Contaminant Chemistry, Hadal Zone

Stockholm University’s Department of Environmental Science is recruiting a PhD student for a project focused on chemical persistence in the hadal zone—the deepest regions of the ocean. The successful candidate will join the Contaminant Chemistry Unit, which investigates the occurrence and behavior of pollutants in the environment. The project, titled “Small but efficient – can hadal sediment microbes degrade persistent chemicals? (Hadal-Degrade),” will use state-of-the-art mass spectrometry to analyze contaminants in sediments from deep-sea trenches and conduct lab-based biodegradation experiments in high-pressure chambers. The research aims to advance understanding of contaminant cycling in hadal zones and explore sustainable bioremediation solutions. Applicants must have a strong background in natural sciences, with specific coursework and thesis experience in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Physics, or Meteorology. Experience with chromatography, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and trace analysis of environmental contaminants is advantageous. The position is a 4-year, full-time, fixed-term employment, with salary according to university regulations. Applications must be submitted via Stockholm University's recruitment system, including a personal letter, CV, and all required documents. The deadline for applications is November 3, 2025. For more information, contact Professor Anna Sobek ([email protected]).
