PhD on the Synthesis of Polymers for Additive Manufacturing and Drug Delivery

This PhD position at KU Leuven focuses on the synthesis of new functional, biodegradable polymers for use in additive manufacturing and drug delivery applications. The project is highly interdisciplinary and will be conducted in close collaboration with the Department of Materials Engineering, leveraging the expertise and facilities of Prof. Mignon, who specializes in polymer science and additive manufacturing. KU Leuven is a top-ranked university, recognized for its innovation and research excellence. The main objective of the project is to develop synthetic polymers that can be processed into micro- and nano-fibrous structures using techniques such as electrospinning and other additive manufacturing methods. These polymers will be optimized for properties such as hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity, and their potential for drug delivery will be explored, including the development of nanoparticles and functionalization with active compounds. The project offers the opportunity for the PhD student to shape the research direction according to their expertise and interests, provided it aligns with the core themes of polymer synthesis, functionalization, and application in additive manufacturing and drug delivery. The position is initially funded for one year, with the expectation that the candidate will apply for an FWO PhD scholarship to secure continued funding. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, international research group and benefit from a supportive environment at a leading European university. Applicants should have a master's degree in chemical engineering, materials engineering, chemistry, or a related field, and demonstrate strong motivation, teamwork, and communication skills. Fluency in English is required. The application deadline is November 17, 2025. For further information, candidates can contact Prof. dr. Arn Mignon or Jef Brebels.
