PhD Position in Molecular Dynamics and Multiscale Modeling at University of Houston

The Multiphase Transport Laboratory at the University of Houston, led by Assistant Professor Ben Xu, is seeking a fully funded PhD student to join their research group. The group specializes in molecular dynamics (MD), computational materials science, and multiscale simulation, with a focus on ultrafast laser–liquid interactions, high-temperature alloy design using MD and DFT-informed modeling, and multiscale modeling of Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) processes. Research in the group involves developing atomistic-to-continuum frameworks that integrate LAMMPS/ReaxFF, phase-field and CFD modeling, and thermo-mechanical-metallurgical simulations, utilizing high-performance computing (HPC) and GPU-accelerated workflows. The group collaborates with national laboratories and industry partners, providing students with opportunities for high-impact publications and conference presentations at venues such as ASME and TMS. Ideal candidates will have experience in molecular dynamics (preferably with LAMMPS), DFT, phase-field modeling, or multiphysics simulation. Applicants should possess a strong background in computational materials science and be prepared to work on interdisciplinary projects at the intersection of materials science, mechanical engineering, and physics.
