Doctoral Fellow in Political Science – Ghent University

Ghent University, one of Belgium’s leading research institutions, is offering a full-time doctoral fellowship in the Department of Political Sciences. The position is hosted by the GASPAR research group, which focuses on innovative topics in political science, including political ambition and the structuring of political debate through party cues. The successful candidate will develop and execute an independent research project in one of these areas, leading to a PhD in political science. The university employs over 15,000 people and offers a vibrant academic environment with 11 faculties and more than 85 departments. Ghent University is renowned for its state-of-the-art study programmes and research opportunities, making it an ideal place for doctoral research. The doctoral fellow will be expected to set up, elaborate, and execute a research project autonomously, participate in educational and administrative tasks, and contribute to the GASPAR team. The position includes opportunities to attend international conferences and publish in international outlets. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in political science, sociology, public administration, political psychology, or a related human sciences field. Essential qualifications include a scientific and critical attitude, passion for research, familiarity with political science theories, basic training in quantitative research methods (with willingness to improve), excellent academic results, and strong writing skills in English (and preferably Dutch, or readiness to improve). Teamwork and responsibility within the GASPAR group are also required. The fellowship is initially for 12 months, with possible extension up to 48 months upon positive evaluation. The fellowship amount is 100% of the net salary of an AAP member, determined by family status and seniority, and is free of personal income tax. Ghent University staff enjoy numerous benefits, including training opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. To apply, candidates should send their CV, diploma copy, motivation letter, and a one-page document outlining their approach to one of the research topics to Prof. Bram Wauters ([email protected]) by 8 July 2026, 1 pm. All documents should be merged into one PDF file. Late applications will not be accepted. Job interviews will be held in the last week of August. Last-year students graduating in June are encouraged to apply. For further information about the GASPAR research group, visit www.gaspar.ugent.be .
