The University of Surrey is offering a fully funded PhD studentship in Cardiovascular Science, focusing on cardiac organoids and atrial fibrillation research. This opportunity is part of the Cardiovascular Research Group and is supervised by Dr Patrizia Camelliti (University of Surrey) in collaboration with Professor Chris Denning (University of Nottingham). The project aims to develop human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived atrial cardiomyocytes as an ethical and accurate alternative to animal models for studying atrial fibrillation, a condition affecting over 43 million people worldwide. The research will involve advanced cell culture, microscopy, flow cytometry, cardiac electrophysiology, molecular biology, transcriptomics, and proteomics to generate and characterise tissue with native heart properties and test new drug therapies. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team, benefit from hands-on supervision by an award-winning mentor, and receive comprehensive training in research and transferable skills through the Doctoral Training Centre. The University of Surrey provides state-of-the-art facilities and is located in Guildford, UK, with excellent transport links to London. Eligibility is restricted to candidates who pay UK/home rate fees. Applicants should hold or be about to obtain a first or upper second-class honours degree in medical sciences, biomedical sciences, biomedical engineering, molecular biology, physiology, biochemistry, or related disciplines. An MSc/MRes in cardiovascular/molecular science and/or prior research experience in molecular or cell biology is advantageous. Essential qualities include scientific curiosity, strong communication and organisational skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. English language proficiency is required if applicable. The studentship is fully funded by NC3Rs, covering tuition fees at the Home rate, research expenses, training/conference funds, and an annual tax-free stipend of £20,780. The start date is July or October 2026, and the application deadline is 28 February 2026. To apply, email your CV (with modules and grades), a supporting statement, contact details for two academic referees, degree certificates and transcripts, and English language transcript (if applicable) to Dr Patrizia Camelliti at [email protected]. Informal enquiries are welcome at the same address. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews in March.
