PhD Position in Innovation Studies: Economics, Digitalization, and Green Innovation

The University of Bath School of Management invites applications for a PhD position in Innovation Studies, focusing on innovation economics, green and environmental innovation, and the interplay between digitalization and innovation. Prospective students are encouraged to propose research in areas such as R&D investment, public R&D support, patents, productivity growth, digital adoption and its implications for innovation, sustainable technologies, environmental policies, green innovation diffusion, and the transition to low-carbon economies. The program particularly welcomes candidates interested in quantitative data analysis, with knowledge of or willingness to learn tools like Stata, R, and Python. Successful applicants may benefit from short-term placements in innovation policy institutions and engagement with policy makers, offering exposure to the interface between academic research and real-world policy challenges. The application process involves submitting an initial research proposal (2,500–3,000 words) detailing the thesis title, aims, rationale, methodology, timeline, and bibliography. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by the supervisory team, and those demonstrating strong potential will be supported in developing a formal application. Scholarship opportunities are available through URSA/GRS studentships, which provide a living allowance and tuition fee waiver for three or four years; self-funded and externally funded applicants are also accepted. All PhD students must begin registration and training on 28 September 2026, with applicants without an MRes degree entering the Integrated Management programme. The university values diversity and inclusivity, encouraging applications from under-represented groups and consideration of personal circumstances affecting educational attainment.
