A fully funded PhD opportunity is available at the University of Aberdeen as part of the NERC-funded TARGET CDT, focusing on mineral prospect imaging and mining environment monitoring using innovative seismological deployments and advanced data processing. The project is supervised by David Cornwell, Senior Lecturer in Geophysics, and aims to develop new methods for imaging mineral resources and monitoring mining environments, integrating fieldwork, geophysical techniques, and machine learning. The position is open to UK students, with tuition fees covered; international students must secure additional funding for higher tuition costs. CASE support is provided by SmartSolo Scientific. Applicants should have at least a 2:1 Bachelors degree in a relevant field such as geophysics, geology, earth science, physics, or engineering, and must submit a CV, transcripts, certificates, and evidence of English proficiency if required. Applications are made through the TARGET CDT website and the University of Leicester’s portal, with a deadline of January 7, 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an online interview. The TARGET CDT is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusivity, offering accessible training and reasonable adjustments for applicants with specific needs. The project offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of earth science, geophysics, and mining engineering, contributing to the sustainable development of critical mineral resources and the energy transition.
