About
Emre Karaman is an Associate Professor at Aarhus University in Denmark. His research focuses on genomic prediction, QTL detection, and the integration of multi-breed and crossbred data in livestock populations. His recent articles explore innovative methodologies for improving predictive abilities and health traits in dairy cattle populations, particularly in relation to breed origin of alleles. He is actively contributing to advancements in genomic breeding strategies within the livestock sector.

Aarhus University in Denmark is offering a fully funded PhD fellowship focused on the genetic improvement of dairy cow longevity using AI-camera body weight data. This opportunity is part of the Quantitative Genetics & Genomics Programme and is ideal for students and researchers interested in animal breeding, genetics, livestock sciences, and data analytics. The project leverages the CowFIT 3D AI-camera system, which collects body weight data from over 30,000 dairy cows, and integrates this with the Danish Cattle Database to develop advanced breeding and management tools for sustainable dairy farming. Key research areas include AI-based phenotyping, genomic selection, statistical modelling, and the use of genetic software tools such as DMU, F90, and AIREML. The project aims to improve the longevity and productive lifespan of dairy cows, model calving weight, maturity, and energy balance, and advance genomic accuracy for traits like longevity, Saved Feed, and other functional traits. Collaboration with VikingGenetics and access to cutting-edge technologies make this a unique opportunity for those aiming to build an international research career in sustainable and smart dairy systems. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (120 ECTS) in Animal Breeding, Genetics, or a related field, and have experience with R, SAS, Python, and Unix Shell. Knowledge of genetic software and strong English communication skills are required, while experience with livestock datasets is an advantage. The fellowship is fully funded, covering tuition and providing a stipend, with the place of employment at Aarhus University, C.F. Møllers Allé 3, Building 1130, 8000 Aarhus C, Denmark. The application deadline is 4 January 2026, with a preferred start date of 1 March 2026. Interested candidates should submit their application via the Aarhus University Portal, including a project description as a PDF. For further information, applicants can contact the main supervisor, Associate Professor Emre Karaman, or the co-supervisor, Postdoc Rasmus Bak Stephansen. This is a rare chance to join one of Europe’s leading research groups and contribute to a greener, more efficient dairy future.
