Ghent University invites applications for a full-time doctoral fellowship in the Department of Green Chemistry and Technology, focusing on the UPLIFT project: “Upcycling Lignin Biorefinery Waste through Thermal Conversions.” This multidisciplinary project, funded by Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship (VLAIO), aims to convert lignin—a major biorefinery byproduct—into high-value products for industrial applications such as phenolic resins, surfactants, polyurethanes, and flame-retardant materials. The successful candidate will join the Thermochemical Biomass Conversion Research Group (TCCB), led by Prof. Frederik Ronsse, and collaborate with partners including VITO’s Sustainable Polymer Technology group and Hasselt University’s Analytical and Circular Chemistry research group. The research will involve (hydro)pyrolysis of lignin residues to produce lignin-oil rich in phenolic compounds, and the fractionation of these oils for use by project partners. Experimental work will include fast pyrolysis on laboratory-scale setups, hydropyrolysis in autoclave reactors, and operation of fractional distillation equipment. This position offers a stimulating environment within a large, research-intensive university, with access to state-of-the-art facilities and a strong industrial advisory board. The fellowship is initially for 12 months, renewable up to 48 months upon positive evaluation, and includes a competitive, tax-free salary with comprehensive staff benefits such as training opportunities, generous holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Bioengineering Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or an equivalent field by the appointment date. Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in biomass conversion, the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, fluency in English, and willingness to engage in international research activities. The project start date is April 1, 2026, and the application deadline is February 16, 2026. To apply, send your CV, diploma (if available), and motivation letter to Prof. Frederik Ronsse and Stef Ghysels at the provided emails, or use the application link.
