Postdoc in Nanoparticle Waveguide Microscopy

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral position in Nanoparticle Waveguide Microscopy, based in Gothenburg, Sweden. This two-year appointment, with the possibility of a one-year extension, focuses on advancing a surface-sensitive, label-free waveguide scattering microscopy (WGSM) platform for nanoparticle characterization in advanced therapies. The research aims to develop a clean-room-fabricated planar waveguide chip capable of generating a surface-confined evanescent field for detecting and characterizing biological nanoparticles, including lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), extracellular vesicles (EVs), viruses, and other nanoscale drug delivery vehicles. The project will integrate advanced optical modulation (polarization and multi-wavelength excitation) into the current waveguide chip settings, further develop microfluidics for controlled fluidic exchange, and enhance data-driven image analysis to provide quantitative single-particle readouts. The position is hosted by the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Division of Nano and Biological Physics, which operates at the intersection of physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine. The division is renowned for its research on nanoscopic and biomolecular structures and their interactions with external stimuli, and collaborates with multiple departments at Chalmers, Gothenburg University, and international partners. Applicants should be highly motivated and possess strong competence in at least one of the following areas: micro- and nanofabrication (clean-room processing, lithography, etching, microfluidic integration, planar waveguide fabrication), optics and photonics (laser systems, polarization control, fiber coupling, spectral imaging, evanescent-field optics, advanced microscopy), or data analysis and computational imaging (quantitative image analysis, scattering modeling, signal processing, machine learning, neural-network-based data interpretation). The project is closely connected to national and international collaborations in advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs), RNA therapeutics, and nanoparticle-based drug delivery. Key responsibilities include identifying technical bottlenecks and development opportunities within the WGSM platform, evaluating improvements in fabrication, optics, automation, or analysis, interacting with academic and industrial partners, designing and executing sub-projects, planning experimental campaigns and modeling efforts, contributing to grant writing and reporting, and developing quantitative models linking optical signals to nanoparticle properties. The role involves close collaboration with researchers in physics, chemistry, biology, pharmacy, and medicine, as well as industrial stakeholders. Initiative, technical development, and scientific publication are expected. Chalmers offers flexible working hours, a healthy work–life balance, access to advanced research infrastructure, and strong opportunities for scientific publication and professional development. As a postdoc, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. The position requires physical presence in Gothenburg throughout the employment period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. To apply, submit your application in English via the online application form. Attach your CV, publication list, teaching experience, and a personal letter as PDF files. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is 2026-05-31, but the selection process is ongoing and may close once a suitable candidate is found. For questions, contact Dr. Björn Agnarsson ([email protected]) or Professor Fredrik Höök ([email protected]). Chalmers University of Technology is a leading institution in technology and natural sciences, with a strong commitment to scientific excellence, sustainability, and innovation. The university fosters an inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg, with generous benefits including parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. Swedish courses are available for non-native speakers.
