Loughborough University London is offering a fully funded PhD opportunity focused on the intersection of state power, green policy, and ecological transition. This project investigates how state capacity and state-owned enterprises (SOEs) shape ecological transitions and climate policy outcomes, drawing on political economy, policy analysis, and advanced data methods. The research is embedded within the Institute for International Management and Entrepreneurship, providing access to a vibrant social sciences research community and strong policy networks in the UK. Key research questions include the instrumental use of SOEs by states to achieve ecological transition goals, the response of SOEs to state-mandated policies, and the factors influencing compliance or resistance. The project welcomes sectoral studies (energy, mining, agriculture, manufacturing) and is particularly interested in cases from the Global South, where just transition challenges are acute. The societal impact of green industrial policies on local communities is also a core theme. Applicants should have at least an upper second-class honours degree (2:1) or international equivalent in a relevant field, with a strong interest in political economy, policy analysis, and climate or ecological policy. Experience with data methods and social sciences is desirable. English language proficiency is required. The studentship is competitive, with tuition for international students set at £23,100 per year (2026-27); UK fees are to be confirmed.
