Funded PhD in Biofilms, Antimicrobial Resistance and Wastewater Treatment at Glasgow Caledonian University

Funded PhD opportunity in biofilms, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), microbiology, and wastewater research at Glasgow Caledonian University , in collaboration with Scottish Water and the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC) . The project, “Biofilms: Hidden Engines Driving Antimicrobial Resistance?” , is based in the Research Centre for Health (ReaCH) and focuses on understanding how biofilms contribute to the accumulation of AMR in wastewater treatment works. The research aims to identify opportunities for interventions that could reduce AMR and protect public health. The successful PhD candidate will work with the laboratories of Dr Janice Spencer and Professor Gordon Ramage , alongside industrial partner expertise from Dr Ania Escudero and Scottish Water. The project combines internationally recognised biofilm expertise and modelling with real-world wastewater environments, offering training across academia and industry. Research themes include monitoring AMR levels in wastewater biofilms, investigating the influence of seasonality and pollutants, optimising biofilm models, and assessing biofilm metabolic function. Relevant academic keywords include microbiology , biofilm modelling , wastewater treatment , environmental biology , data analysis , and public engagement . Funding: full Home (UK) tuition fees plus a PhD stipend at the UKRI rate (£21,805 from October 2026) for four years. Eligibility: UK students only. No specific IELTS/TOEFL or degree classification requirement is stated in the post. Deadline: Thursday 30 July 2026. Start date: 1 October 2026. How to apply: Apply via the university application process page, select Biological Sciences and Full time Sept 2026 start , and enter reference SHLS26146 - Spencer .
