PhD/Licentiate Opportunity in Digital Twins, Electrified Construction, and Flexible Energy Management at KTH

PhD/licentiate opportunity at KTH in digital twins, electrified construction, and flexible energy management. The Department of Geoinformatics at KTH Royal Institute of Technology is recruiting a doctoral student for a two-year licentiate position in the DISSECT project. The project develops data-driven models, modular digital twins, and decision-support methods for emission-free, resource-efficient, electrified construction , with a strong focus on flexible energy management in electrified groundwork construction. Research topics may include GeoBIM , 3D voxel models of ground conditions, quantities and material flows, material tracking, volume and mass calculations, inverse geological modelling, and analysis of sensor and telematics data from machines and transport. The logistics side may involve optimization of construction processes, mass transport, circular material flows, and charging constraints. Methods can combine geospatial data handling, database technology, data science, machine learning, simulation, and optimization, including model predictive control and reinforcement learning. The position is linked to the Integrated Transport Research Lab and the DISSECT consortium. Supervisors mentioned are Gyözö Gidofalvi and Jonas Mårtensson . The project is funded by Vinnova through the Advanced Digitalization programme and the Industrial Flexible Energy Management call. Eligibility highlights: applicants need an advanced degree or equivalent, plus English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 . Strong candidates will have experience in simulation, optimization, digital twin systems, cloud/container environments, large datasets, energy systems, sustainability, and research or industry projects. Swedish and English communication skills are considered meritorious. Application deadline: 2026-08-14. Apply via KTH’s recruitment system and include degree certificates, transcripts, proof of language requirements, CV, cover letter, and representative publications or technical reports.
